Is it safe to start taking birth control pills before you start your period?

I stopped taking birth control for about 4 months. Without it, my periods are not regular at all. My period is about a month late, and I’m concerned that it won’t come for another month or so. Is it safe to take the pill before the first Sunday after my period starts? Also, what is the significance in waiting that long?

Since your periods are irregular – and you have verified that you are not pregnant – I’d start a new pack of pills on Sunday —
If, however, you feel the need to have a period – tell your Dr. – he/she can give you a shot or pills to make you start — and then you can proceed from there —
Most women wouldn’t have to "wait that long" – as they would have a period every month – Mainly it is to synchronize your period on the pills as closely to your natural period (hormone levels and ovulation date) as possible. And to make sure that you are not pregnant when you start the pills —
Remember to use condoms until you have had 2 scheduled periods on the pills — (if they are not strong enough – you can get pregnant – my second child was conceived on pills) —
    Good luck -

I didn’t wait till my first Sunday, and so far everything is good. My periods are regular, and I have no kids or any on the way.

If you wait…well you can get pregnant if you have unprotected sex. Other than that, it’s all up to you. No danger in taking the pills now, and no danger is waiting either if you stay abstinent or use condoms.

First, if you are sexually active then take a pregnancy test just to be sure. Then read the directions that come with it. If you don’t have them then look online. You should be able to start the pills at any time. Depending on what pills you are taking it should state to use a back up method if you have sex for either one week or one month. If you still aren’t sure then you can call your doctor or pharmacist and they can answer any questions you have.
